Year 2: Eric Carle-inspired Orange Elephant

First we read Eric Carle's The Artist who Painted a Blue Horse, based on a Franz Marc painting. This book discusses the concept of painting with unusual and unpredictable colours. Students painted a warm colour sheet, to later cut up for their elephant, and a cool colour background sheet. Students cut up the elephant pieces to create their own whimsical orange elephant!

Years 5 & 6 Metallic Shape Collage inspired by Gustav Klimt

Students learned about Austrian painter Gustav Klimt who lived from 1862-1918. Klimt loved to create visual texture with patterns and lines, and also went through a golden phase using a lot of gold leaf in his paintings. Students used metallic paints and texture tools to paint a sheet which they then cut up into shapes and displayed as a collage on a black, lined background.

Year 2 Abstract Cubism Bird

The Cubism Bird process: After a discussion about abstract/cubism painting, Year 2 students drew a cubism bird or animal with oil pastel and then painted it using the double-loading technique with white and either two warm or two cool colours, blending to see how many tints they could make on their bird. In week 2 they drew white pastel lines on a background paper and painted a warm or cool colour wash on top. The following week students cut out their bird and glued it onto their background, also adding straight lines on the bird's body. Now on show in the Main Building corridor.

Years 3 & 4: Paul Klee-inspired Cat & Bird

Students listened to the fun and colourful story of The Cat and the Bird,  based on Paul Klee's painting, Cat & Bird.  They drew their own Klee cat and bird with oil pastel  and added colour with food dye wash.

Years 3 & 4: Winslow Homer Sunsets

Years 3 and 4 drew beautiful chalk pastel sunsets after viewing paintings by American painter, Winslow Homer.

Welcome to KPS Visual Arts 2016

To assist in my learning all 340 student names at Kerrimuir Primary School, in the first week of term all grades decorated art room table name cards using a variety of drawing materials. This term our learning focus will be on drawing and collage. We're also off to a great start creating fabulous artworks! Pictured here are year 5 and 6 Picasso-inspired abstract cubism portraits created with water-soluble pastels.
