Year 1 Butterfly Scratch Film

First students listened to Butterflies are Patient, an interesting book all about the life of a butterflies and different kinds of butterflies. Next they drew a plan for their butterfly picture to use when scratching their film paper. It's rainbow coloured paper with a black film on top. When you scratch this film off the top, the coloured paper underneath is revealed. Students used a wooden stylus to scratch their film.

Year Prep & Prep/1C Watercolour Fish

First we read part of a book on fish and discussed how fish breath. Next using oil pastel students learned via a guided lesson how to draw a simple fish. Lastly students used watercolour paint to bring their fish to life.

Year Prep & Year 1 Roy G. Biv Drawings

Students listened to a song called Roy G. Biv by Greg Percy. Each letter of this name is the first letter of a colour of the rainbow. Students drew a picture of what they thought Roy might look like!

Year 2 Cityscape Fireworks Scratch Film Picture

Students drew up a plan before scratching their picture using a wooden stylus. To finish students framed their own picture on backing paper.

Year 1 Spider Web Weaving Plates

First we listened to the book Sophie's Masterpiece read aloud by CCH Pounder on Storyline Online. This story is about a wonderful spider named Sophie who is initially misunderstood and feared, yet finally seen clearly and recognised as an artist that can weave a beautiful web.

Students learned how to draw a simple cartoon spider and drew this on their plate, colouring it in with marker and then colouring the background with crayon. Next students threaded their plastic needle and weaved a web across their plate. This was a tricky lesson yet all students persevered with impressive results.

Year 2 Pattern Monsters

Year 2 students listened to the book, Where the Wild Things Are, and then drew their own monster. We discussed pattern and students added this feature to their drawings. Next they cut out their monster and glued it onto their oil pastel rubbing picture for the background.

Year 4 Drawing to Music

Students listened to four different types of music and drew how the music made them feel. We also played several drawing games which encouraged cooperation and working together.

Year 1 Abstract Cubism Fish

Students first drew their abstract cubism fish after briefly looking and discussing Paul Klee's Sinbad and the Sailor painting, which uses Picasso based abstract cubism principles. We reviewed which colours are warm and cool on the colour wheel. Next they used acrylic paint in warm colours to paint their fish and then cool colour food dye wash with white oil pastel resist lines for the background.

Prep & P/1C Origami Dog Stick Puppet

We first looked at a book called Spot a Dog which shows famous paintings that all contain dogs. Next students folded a dog head and decorated this with crayons. These were then glued onto a stick to create a puppet.

Prep & Prep/1C Colour Wheel Flower


We reviewed primary and secondary colours and students drew concentric circles and petals before painting their flower with tempera paint. The following week students used small brushes and black acrylic paint to outline their colour wheel flower.

Year 1 Near and Far Houses


Students learned about perspective and drew near and far houses with a horizon line. Next they painted their picture with primary and secondary tempera paint colours.

Years 3 & 4 Autumn Leaves

The Autumn Leaves process: Students drew leaves and painted these with tempera paint in warm colours, and the background in cool colours. They experimented by putting salt and rubbing alcohol on the wet paint to achieve interesting effects. Lastly, fine outlines were painted in acrylic.

Year 1 Fantastic Frogs


The Fantastic Frog process: First we read a book together about the life-cycle of frogs. Students then followed a directed line drawing lesson using oil pastels. Lastly, they painted their picture with a food dye wash and named their frog. You can view some of these frogs this term in the library!

Term 2: Prep & Prep/1C Mixed Up Chameleons

This term our visual arts learning focus across all levels will be on painting and construction. In the first week of the term we read Eric Carle's Mixed Up Chameleon. In the story the chameleon wishes he was a different animal, but soon realises that it's best to be himself. Students drew wonderful chameleons using oil pastel and then painted it with watercolour paints.

Year 1 Oil Pastel Abstract Face Collage

Students drew a face with marker and coloured it with oil pastels in primary and secondary colours. Next they cut out 16 even pieces and glued these onto the page to create an abstract collage.

Years 5 & 6: One-Liners

Many modern artists explored one-liners as a way of playing with line. Students had fun trying their hand at drawing simple pictures using one line, i.e. never lifting their pen from the page!

Years 3 & 4: Paul Klee-inspired Cat & Bird

Students listened to the fun and colourful story of The Cat and the Bird,  based on Paul Klee's painting, Cat & Bird.  They drew their own Klee cat and bird with oil pastel  and added colour with food dye wash.
